Illinois Picks Six Insurers for Medicaid Contracts, Adds Humana

Illinois intends to award new managed care contracts under its HealthChoice Illinois Medicaid program to six insurers, the state said, according to Healthcare Dive. Each award represents tens of billions of dollars in revenue, making the procurement one of the most significant payer contests in the state.

Most of the winners are incumbents already serving Illinois Medicaid members. The exception is Humana, which gains a foothold in a market it did not previously serve. Securing a Medicaid managed care contract gives an insurer steady, government-backed enrollment and recurring revenue, which is why these state procurements draw fierce competition among national and regional plans.

Medicaid is in flux nationally as states rebalance enrollment after pandemic-era coverage protections ended and as federal funding pressures mount. For insurers, holding or winning a state contract is critical to maintaining membership and topline growth. Illinois members should see continuity of coverage given the heavy incumbent presence, with Humana's entry adding a new option.

Optum to Cut 92 Jobs in California Amid Oxnard Closure

Optum is cutting 92 jobs in California, mostly from the closure of an Oxnard management services organization, per June 1 regulatory filings.

Why it matters: The cuts show that even the largest payer-owned care delivery operations are trimming local footprints as cost pressure mounts on UnitedHealth Group.
