MaineHealth to End Labor and Delivery at Lincoln Hospital

MaineHealth is ending inpatient labor and delivery services at MaineHealth Lincoln Hospital in Damariscotta, Maine, effective Dec. 18, according to an Aug. 6 health system news release shared with Becker's Hospital Review. The system's board of trustees ratified the decision the same day. Deliveries will move to MaineHealth Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick, about a half hour away.

The closure fits a widening national pattern. Rural hospitals across the country have been shuttering maternity units, squeezed by low birth volumes, staffing shortages for obstetricians and nurses, and thin or negative margins on labor and delivery. Each closure stretches the distance expectant mothers must travel to give birth, raising concerns about access and outcomes in already underserved communities.

For MaineHealth, consolidating deliveries at a larger site concentrates limited clinical staff and volume. For patients in the Damariscotta area, it means longer drives during labor and fewer local options, a tradeoff now playing out at rural facilities nationwide.
